Athens is without doubt the one of the main centres for shopping in Greece and the numerous districts in Athens provide a shopper's paradise. Whether you are looking for high fashion, antiques, furniture or home accessories, rest assured that shopping in Athens, Greece, will provide you with a huge choice. You can also admire the wonderful Athens monuments, statues and fountains as you explore the streets for some serious Athens shopping.
Shopping in Athens is excellent and there are an enormous selection of shops. The diverse range includes traditional arts and crafts shops, open-air street markets and top fashion boutiques that rival those of Paris and New York.
Shops in Athens generally open on Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 14:00 or 09:00 to 15:00. On Tuesdays, Thursday and Friday there is late shopping from 17:30 until around 20:30. Department stores and tourist shops in Athens often open for longer. During August, some shops in Athens close when the Greeks take their annual holidays.
In Athens, the main shopping district is a triangle that is formed by the Syntagma, Omonoia and Monastiraki squares and these are frequented by locals and tourists alike. This area is a good place to purchase clothes, shoes and everyday household items. The Mitropoleos, Ermou, Aiolou and nearby streets provide a wide choice of leather goods, including handbags and jackets.
Probably the most exclusive shopping area in Athens is to be found in Kolonaki, where there are some of the most expensive art galleries and antique shops. There are also many other stores selling clothes and fashion accessories. Around Athinas, Monastiraki and Plaka there are lots of spice and herb outlets, secondhand bookstores, catering shops and religious retailers. For a variety of Athens souvenirs, Plaka is a good place to visit and is full of souvenir shops, including antiques, paintings, jewellery, baskets, copperware and much more besides.
The main department stores in Athens are Lampropulos and Fokas, who stock a vast array of clothes, gifts, electrical goods, household items, beauty products and many other items.
