Football in Athens is a passion for the locals and there are two main rival Athens football teams - Panathinaikos and Olympiakos, who are often the subject of debate. Both teams are supported by many large private companies in Athens and football matches are played every Wednesday and Sunday during the football season, which runs from September to May. The Panathinaikos Athens football team are based at the Olympiako Stadium in Marousi, which seats around 80,000 spectators, and the Olympiakos Athens football team are based at the Karaiskaki Stadium in Piraeus.

Glyfada Golf Course is the only golf course in Athens and is situated next to the site of the former Athens Airport, in the Glyfada region. With 18 holes and a par of 72, this championship golf resort has a practice range, a golfing shop, golf rental and there is also a popular restaurant and bar. The golf course is easy to reach by bus.

Athens is home to many superb beaches and Astir Beach Club is particularly special. With fine sand and excellent facilities, Astir Beach Club has beach chairs, umbrellas, showers, lockers, changing rooms, a volleyball court and a popular snack bar. An exciting range of watersports, including waterskiing, windsurfing and jet-skiing, are also available at the club. Buses to Astir Beach Club are readily available.

Athens is where the marathon race actually originated, when a Greek messenger ran to deliver news of a battle victory. He ran all the way from Marathon to Athens with the important news and then sadly died from exhaustion shortly afterwards. The Athens Marathon is now a popular annual event and every year thousands of participants from all over the world join in the race, which takes place on the first Sunday in November. Starting at 08:30 from the historic battlefield, the race finishes at the Panathenaic Stadium.
